Location that travels with you
OpenGeo sees a bright future in open source mobile GIS applications that offer a low cost of entry and a high degree of customization to provide specialize spatial solutions.
Integrating mobile mapping application can save costs for organizations as the cost of a smart phone is often less than that of a specialized GPS and GIS mobile unit. The smart phones also allow for dual use (can your gps make phone calls?), and the possible integration of mapping with reporting or communication tasks such as taking pictures or sharing location data by email.
Starting with iOL.js, OpenGeo is moving to bring the power of it's stack to the world of mobile devices. iOL.js makes OpenLayers map handling and editing capabilities available on the iPhone. Combined with technologies allowing for native device access on the iPhone such as PhoneGap, iOL.js creates a rich framework for not just building iPhone mapping webapps, but as a library for native GIS application development.
